How Often Should You Wash Your Hair?

We are more than sure that you have asked yourself this question more than once or twice. So how often should you wash your hair? We determine by the hair type and the scalp condition.

As you know, hair type is a little ephemeral concept. In fact, there is no oily or dry hair. There is the scalp, which becomes dirty quickly, and there is the skin, which is prone to peeling and does not have enough moisture, which means that the hair does not have enough moisture.

Nevertheless, no matter how scientists call the differences in the structure and “behavior” of what happens to our head and what grows out of it, all this affects the frequency of washing. Although, this question (as well as many questions of existence) does not have a universal answer that is suitable for everyone.

While some people are experimenting and are completely against washing their hair with shampoo, others are trying new means. We try to divide everyone into conditional groups and help everyone.

Thin hair

As a rule, it does not have volume, so the hair lies close to the head. It becomes dirty quicker. When talking about hair, you can use the phrase which marketers like – “oily hair”. You want to wash it every day, and this is not a crime. It is only important to follow a few rules.

Firstly, use a deep cleaning shampoo at least once a week. Secondly, when using any shampoo, follow a simple scheme: first of all, you have to squeeze the product into your hands, then start massaging the scalp and only then rinse it with the water.

Please, pay attention that you need to use the shampoo only on the roots, the rest of the hair will have enough foam during rinsing. Thin hair is recommended to be washed with warm and even cool water rather than with hot water because this helps to improve the functioning of the sebaceous glands.

Dry straight hair

Excessive dryness (first of all along the length) of the hair can be the result of a genetic predisposition or improper handling: open sun, coloring, constant straightening or, on the contrary, curling – all this, of course, affects the condition of the hair. On the other hand, there is no need to wash your hair every day. As a rule, 2-3 times a week are enough.

Trichologists recommend owners of this type of hair to use a mask before shampoo – so the strands will get enough moisture. Then follow the usual “program”: take shampoo and then use conditioner on the ends of the hair.

Curly hair

Its frequent problem is the dryness associated with the porous hair structure. As the hair curls from the roots, it is difficult for it to obtain the natural oils that remain at the roots. “Shampooing” can be arranged 1-2 times a week. The most important thing is to use a moisturizing series of products – this applies to the shampoo, the mask, and the conditioner. What is the difference from the previous paragraph about dry straight hair?

As a rule, the strands that are straight in their structure look like this due to a lack of moisture on the roots themselves. If you look at this type under a microscope, then numerous flakes will be noticeable (perhaps they can be examined with the naked eye and defined as dandruff).

Curly hair usually has a different kind of problem – there is just enough moisture at the roots, but nutrients cannot reach them quickly because of the curly structure. Therefore, trichologists advise people with curly hair to wash it less often – so that the curls are provided with the necessary useful elements.

Of course, the described situation does not mean that owners of curls never have dandruff, and owners of dry hair only “struggle” with it. We are talking about general trends.

Dyed hair

Colorists joke: the best way to save a new color from washing out is to take a shower less often. Everyone chooses for herself/himself whether to laugh or still try to look for the truth in this statement. However, we suggest, first of all, to rely on your own type of hair and to add products for colored hair to the beauty routine.

Sensitive scalp

This is the case when the skin of the head accurately determines your chosen products. If the skin is red and constantly itches; if “flakes” constantly appear on it, it is advisable for you to wash it with shampoos with ketoconazole (apply it to the roots before washing off, preferably from 5-10 minutes) – it is an antifungal drug that at least temporarily restrains not the most pleasant sensations.

As a general rule, all these symptoms are related to genetics, rather than improper care (although, of course, one should not overuse the heating gadgets and sit for hours in the open sun without a hat). You can wash your hair every day, if you do it with the suitable products.
