Getting Rid of Junk: How to Declutter Your Home?

Travel souvenirs, “grandmother’s” furniture, old household appliances and clothes – this junk takes up a lot of space at home, but parting with it is not easy. We are going to tell you how to get rid of unnecessary things in the apartment quickly and without remorse.

Invite guests

This is an example that always works well. Invite important guests to your home – parents, colleagues, friends. It is important that these are people who have a great influence on you. Now that the invitations have been sent out, look around your apartment.

What things would you like to hide away from their eyes? Almost certainly, this will be the junk that you have failed to get rid of in recent years.

Pack it in boxes and carry it outside. If there is a temptation to hide the lumber on the balcony, in the garage, or in the closet, remember that guests are more likely to go out and accidentally see it.

By the way, maybe someone just needs something from your junk?

Make lists of things that annoy you

Removal of junk should be started with a list. Carefully walk through all the rooms of your apartment. Create a list of all things that annoy you and are not used. Now you know your enemy “in person.”

Stick the list in a conspicuous place so that it is always in front of your eyes: a constant reminder of how many annoying things you have in the apartment will allow you to part with the junk without much remorse.

Make a relocation in the apartment

Moving furniture and interior from place to place within the same room is a good way to make sure which things are completely superfluous. Relocate things at least once a year.

Firstly, this helps to “renew” the sensations from your living space: you are also removing the monotony and boredom from your life. Secondly, you will make it clear: an old carpet, an idle vacuum cleaner that has stood in the corner for years, and dusty souvenirs from the trip do not fit at all and interfere with the new arrangement of things.

Sell old things at flea markets

Spare some time to take a photo of the junk that you do not need and put these pictures on Internet flea markets. You will be surprised when it turns out that what you do not need is very necessary for other people. It is necessary so much that they are even ready to pay and take out your so-called junk themselves. Garage sales are also suitable.

Motivate yourself with new purchases

You have already decided and know for sure which things in the house are not needed. Now think: what is needed most? What is missing? Motivate yourself with new purchases. Try to think in a constructive way.

For example: “If I take these old things out of the living room, I can free up some space for a much-needed humidifier.” Or: “If I sell my old things on the Internet, it will be easier for me to buy a new game console for the kid.” Being able to fancy new things simplifies the disposal of the old ones.

Think you’re helping the disadvantaged

Old clothes that look good and without holes, old (but still operating) appliances, old furniture – they seem to be burdensome luggage that clogs your apartment. For some people, your old bulky TV or a dress that you have not worn for five years can be a real miracle.

Find contacts of charitable organizations that help the poor or low-income people and orphanages. Tell them about the unnecessary things that you have (the list you have made). It is very likely that benefactors will take some of the things from you, and other people will be grateful for them later.

Hold back your consumerism

To have less junk in the bowels of your apartment, you need to buy less.

Surprisingly, junk often appears because people act according to a well-established pattern of behavior.

For example, they go to a resort, knowing that they will suffer from buying unnecessary souvenirs – but still, people buy them. Or: in the midst of sales, people buy household appliances and things that they will not use later.

Remember where and under what circumstances junk got into your home. Keep this in mind and restrain yourself from shopping when these circumstances return next time.
